Middleport Pottery

A Historical Adventure

Middleport Pottery was built by Burgess & Leigh.  Imagine stepping back to 1888, when Middleport Pottery first opened its doors. The building itself is a Victorian marvel—red bricks, soaring chimneys, and all the charm of an industrial age with a sprinkle of grandeur. It’s like the Hogwarts of pottery, minus the magic wands, but with a whole lot of clay!

This Grade II*-listed pottery is the UK’s last working Victorian pot bank in continuous production. After 130 years, Middleport Pottery remains home to world-famous Burleigh Pottery, which makes all its ceramic goods onsite. These pieces are crafted with meticulous care, featuring timeless, distinctive patterns. Each item is created with a blend of tradition and flair, making them not only functional but also incredibly charming. Visitors can take a factory tour to watch craftspeople at work. It’s an intricate dance of craftsmanship that keeps the tradition alive and kicking.
Furthermore, a heritage tour allows visitors to explore the original Victorian offices and learn about the people and events that have shaped the pottery. Explore the mould store housing Europe’s largest collection of ceramic moulds, and take a look inside the Pottery’s huge bottle kiln, one of the few remaining in Stoke. Then cross the road over to Harper Street to visit the 1950’s Lodge Keeper’s house “How we lived at Harper Street.” You’ll find our studio over this side too!

A Hub of Entrepreneurialism and Creativity

Middleport Pottery isn’t just about exploring the fascinating history—the site is home to a variety of artisan studios that are open to visitors. You’ll find skilled makers of all kinds, including contemporary illustrators, sculptors, fine artists, bakers, and more. In fact, right next door to the Muddy Publishing Studio is Nickiebees Cupcakes, the perfect destination for a sweet treat.
