We were commissioned to design, write and illustrate a 16-page children’s interactive story quest trail for the National Literacy Trust and Stoke-on-Trent Council as part of the city’s 100th anniversary. The brief was to write a literacy and history-focused activity trail for children aged 7 years and up, highlighting the heritage of the local area, with particular attention to statues and monuments.
Hanley’s Hidden History was thoroughly community-led. We worked with local families and user groups to design the route for the trail, informing which were the essential locations to stop at. Together with the participants, we devised characters for the story quest, centring on two Anglo-Saxon children, inspired by the famous Staffordshire Hoard housed at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, where the trail concludes.
Assets were created for both print and digital formats, and an app version of the story quest is currently in development, due to launch for the centenary celebrations.
