Muddy Publishing worked with the Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCRS) to produce an educational learning resource pack for Key Stage 1 and 2 children. Each primary school in the St Helens Borough was presented with a copy of the educational pack including an extra display poster to inspire pupils to create some wonderful projects!
We edited, illustrated, designed and produced the Sankey Canal learning resource pack with a contemporary twist. As well as informative facts, historic images, illustrations and photography we included activities to reinforce and embed the learning. We designed and illustrated a map of the Sankey Canal area to inspire students in the classroom and designed a branded envelope to send out these exciting resources to schools.
The Sankey Canal opened in 1757 and was England’s first modern canal of the Industrial Age, without it, St Helens would not have developed into a powerhouse of the coal, chemical and glass industries. In 1830 the world’s first intercity railway opened between Liverpool and Manchester, using the impressive Sankey Viaduct to cross over the Sankey Canal and Sankey Brook at Earlestown (known as the ‘Nine Arches’).
Today the canal is a wonderful green and blue corridor through St Helens and a great resource for history, industry, transport, geography, wildlife or environmental projects and lessons.
